The UCC History Society is dedicated to fostering a vibrant community of students passionate about history. Our purpose is to promote an appreciation for the past, encourage intellectual curiosity, and facilitate engaging discussions and events centered around historical themes. Through lectures, debates, workshops, and social gatherings, we aim to enrich the academic and social experience of our members while promoting a deeper understanding of the complexities of our world's history. Whether you're a seasoned history enthusiast or just beginning to explore the past, the UCC History Society welcomes all who share a fascination with the stories that have shaped our present and will influence our future. Join us as we delve into the rich tapestry of human history together!
Now in our third year post-revival, the UCC History Society has only gone from strength to strength. Boasting over 2,700 active members in the college, we have continued to champion the learning of History through interesting, fun, accessbile events, as well as highlighting under-represented topics from renowned speakers and reserchers from UCC and beyond.
We've managed to reach such a wide range of students from all educational disciplines (I, myself, am not a History student), signifying the appetite to learn more about History that exists within the student body.
History influences everything about the world around us - why things are the way they are, how they came to be like this. It is crucially important to understand to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. Especially today, when more and more people seem to be forgetting those very lessons, those with an interest in and a grá for the subject must be encouraged to pursue it. That is my aim for this society - to promote and to encourage the study of History.
It is an honour to serve as your Chairperson. The society would be nowhere without its incredibly engaged and interested members, who make this job so rewarding. I'd be remiss to not also thank my committee, without whom there would not be a single event. You all are the backbone of this society, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have the chance to guide us all in this pursuit of understanding and knowledge.
Cian Mulhearne, Chairperson (2025/26)
As one of UCC's oldest societies, UCC Historical society has been offering amateur historians a place to foster their passion for almost 80 years. From the successful UCC Student History Journal to the Annual History Formal, many of our events and projects have garnered campus and Country wide attention.
